Distinguished Service Award recipients announced
This years recipients of the Distinguished Service Award are a group of faculty and staff members who have worked toward making a lasting impact throughout their time at Queens University.
The Distinguished Service Award recognizes exemplary service to the university over an extended period.
The recipients were selected by the University Council Executive Committee.
This year's recipients of the Distinguished Service Award were selected from an exceptionally strong slate of nominees, and each is a clear example of the quality and dedication that makes Queens University such an outstanding institution. Without a doubt, each has gone above and beyond in their service to the Queens community and in pursuit of excellence says Executive Committee Vice-Chair Doug Bruce (Sc85). On behalf of the University Council, congratulations to all of our Distinguished Service Award recipients and thank you for everything you do for Queens.
Recipients will be celebrated on Oct. 17 (5:30 - 7:30 p.m.) at the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts. Registration for this event is now open.
The 2024 recipients are:
Monica Corbett
Director of Admissions and Student Services for the School of Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs (SGSPA) with 36 years of service in various roles. Monica Corbett is a Queens alumna, an outstanding and tireless contributor to the quality of the graduate student experience with exceptional support of the academic community across more than 100 graduate programs and six faculties/schools who has displayed an enduring dedication to the advancement of student well-being, and an encyclopedic knowledge of policy and procedure.
Wilma Hopman, MA85
Adjunct faculty member and Research Methodologist in the Department of Public Health Sciences with nearly 40 years of service, Wilma Hopman has positively impacted thousands of faculty, staff, and trainees in Queens Health Sciences. She is an expert staff scientist and resource to the research community with national and international reach, and a pivotal player in maintaining Queens reputation for high quality, innovative research and teaching.
Stephen Lougheed
Professor of Biology for 30 years and director and Baillie Chair of the Queens University Biological Field Station, Stephen Lougheed is a visionary leader, accomplished scholar, and mentor with a local and international breadth of impact focused on ecology and conservation. He has a sustained record of outstanding scientific contributions to the understanding of biodiversity and species conservation and is decorated educator renowned for his tireless dedication to fostering an appreciation for nature to all.
Sue Moffatt, Meds78
Associate Professor of Medicine since 1992, interim chair of the Division of Respirology and Sleep Medicine, alumna, Sue Moffatt has been affiliated with Queens for 50 years as both staff and student. An exemplary clinician, educator, mentor, and administrator whose dedication to excellence in patient care, education, and community service has greatly enhanced the universitys reputation, she is the winner of a plethora of prestigious awards with an unwavering dedication to fostering the next generation of healthcare professionals.
Stephanie Simpson, Artsci95, Ed97, MEd11, LLM19
Inaugural Vice-Principal (Culture, Equity, and Inclusion) with a career spanning 25 years, Stephanie Simpson is a Queens alumna and pillar of wisdom and compassion who displays unwavering commitment to the pursuit of anti-racism and equity. She is intimately involved with policy development to make Queens a more accessible and equitable place, whose work continues to have a lasting effect on equity-deserving staff, faculty, and students, and those seeking to support enduring change for the betterment of the Queens community.
Mary Wilson Trider, Com82
A quintessential Queens volunteer as former board chair, long-serving university councillor, trustee, reunion coordinator, and member of multiple committees, Mary Wilson Trider skillfully led the Board of Trustees with strategic vision through the turbulent times of the pandemic all while she was simultaneously the CEO for two separate hospitals in Ontario. An alumna, she is a thoughtful and impactful leader, student champion, and voice of reason dedicated to the betterment of Queens.
